Support in New Zealand

If gambling is worrying you, or you are concerned about someone else’s gambling, you can seek support without waiting for the situation to become more serious. The Gambling Helpline offers free support throughout New Zealand, 24 hours a day.

Call 0800 654 655 or free text 8006. The service can provide support and information and help connect you with other gambling-harm services. Safer Gambling Aotearoa also provides independent information and routes to local help.

Recognising harm

Warning signs can include spending more money or time than planned, trying to recover losses, borrowing to gamble, hiding gambling from others or finding it difficult to stop. Gambling can affect relationships, work and money needed for everyday commitments.

A run of losses does not make a random game due to pay. A bonus, a new payment method or a different operator does not solve a pattern of harm. If your own limits are not working, independent support can help you consider a different next step.

Practical boundaries

If you choose to gamble, decide an affordable spending limit and a time limit before starting. Keep money for bills, food, rent and other commitments separate. Take breaks and avoid increasing stakes to chase money already lost.

Account deposit limits, time-outs, payment blocks and device-blocking tools can reduce access, but they do different jobs. Check when a limit takes effect, how it can be changed and which accounts, transactions or devices it covers. Tools are most useful when their scope is understood.

Self-exclusion

Ask the relevant operator about its self-exclusion and account-closure process. Keep confirmation and check whether the restriction covers other brands or only the named account. Exclusion from a venue, an online operator and a bank’s payment block are separate measures; none should be assumed to cover every other service.

A gambling-support service can help you work through exclusion options and other support. Replacing a closed account or bypassing a restriction can undermine the break you intended to take.

Our website role

Real Money Casinos NZ is an information website for adults aged 18 and over. We cannot enter casino accounts, impose an exclusion on another business, release a withdrawal or provide gambling counselling. The support services linked above are the appropriate route for help with gambling.
